Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) energy savings

Investment in Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)
Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) energy savings is an approach to development that ensures habitats for wildlife are left in a better state than they were before the development. In England, BNG is mandatory under the Environment Act 2021, requiring developers to deliver a 10% increase in biodiversity value.
Here’s a quick overview of how it works:
Measuring Biodiversity: Biodiversity value is measured in standardized units based on the size, quality, location, and type of habitat.
Achieving BNG: Developers can achieve BNG through on-site habitat creation or enhancement, off-site units, or purchasing statutory biodiversity credits.
Planning and Implementation: A Biodiversity Gain Plan must be submitted and approved by the planning authority before development begins.
This approach aims to create and improve natural habitats, ensuring that development projects contribute positively to the environment.
Go further, low carbon green utilities: Companies should select utilities with low carbon levels and green tertiary fuel sources. Noting that Nuclear is neither green, sustainable, requiring government bailouts for storage, and further funding for security and new developments.
Minimum 10% Gain: The Environment Act mandates a minimum of 10% biodiversity net gain for new major projects. This is calculated using the Biodiversity Metric and a biodiversity gain plan.
Habitat Protection: The habitats created or enhanced must be secured for at least 30 years through planning obligations or conservation covenants.
On-site, Off-site, or Credits: BNG can be achieved on-site, off-site, or through a new statutory biodiversity credits scheme.
National Register: There is a national register for net gain delivery sites to ensure transparency and accountability.
BNG is not only about protecting biodiversity but also about contributing to climate regulation and creating a sustainable environment. It’s a step towards ensuring that development projects contribute positively to the natural world.

Renewable Heating Systems: Consider switching to heat pumps, which are more efficient and have a lower carbon footprint than traditional gas boilers.

    Daily Habits

Energy-Efficient Appliances: Use appliances with high energy efficiency ratings and opt for LED lighting.

Eco Modes: Utilize eco modes on appliances like washing machines and dishwashers to reduce energy consumption1.

Air Drying: Air dry clothes instead of using a tumble dryer.

    Low Carbon Travel

Electric Vehicles: Switching to electric vehicles can greatly reduce your carbon footprint.

Public Transport and Cycling: Whenever possible, use public transport, cycle, or walk instead of driving2.

    Behavioural Changes

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Minimizing waste and recycling can help lower carbon emissions.

Conscious Consumption: Be mindful of your energy use, turning off lights and appliances when not in use1.
