Covid-19

Lessons learnt from Covid-19

– Profiteering utility companies: Many utility companies profiteered during Covid-19 when production of gas and electricity generation demand had reduced. The market should have dropped in price due to reduced demand and more capacity.

– Monopoly creation by removing white labels: Utility companies cut commercial connections to white label (companies selling main utility supplies under another name e.g. M&S, Bionic, etc.,) to increase market share, then inflated utility prices to match one another.

– Monopoly creation by price fixing across industry: Energy4 alerted OfGem to price fixing, however emails were ignored. OfGem remains a resolving door for the utility sector. Example: Nuclear utility costs increased on par with oil, gas, coal and wood tertiary fuel sources, sudden increase was not justified. Nuclear fuel materials purchased in 5 to 7 year increments. Oil and Gas is purchased and bunkered in 5-7 year increments.

– Using past wars for utility increases: OfGem ignored complaints that utility companies could claim the war in Ukraine in 2020 caused in inflation in gas prices. Gas intake from Russia stood at 4%. This dropped to 1.3% by 2021. Ukraine was invaded in 2014 with illegal annexation in 2016. Georgia was invaded in 2012, yet no utility increase.

– Long term contracts help you as a business owner

– Do not act socially and economically incentive during a pandemic: Companies who fired staff during the pandemic whilst claiming full government bailout lost clients and online ratings.

– Importance of Public Health Infrastructure: The pandemic highlighted the need for robust public health systems and preparedness for future health crises.

– Global Cooperation: Effective response to global health threats requires international collaboration and information sharing.

– Flexibility in Work and Education: Remote work and online learning became essential, showing the importance of digital infrastructure and flexibility.

– Mental Health Awareness: The pandemic underscored the significance of mental health and the need for accessible mental health services.

– Scientific Innovation: Rapid development and deployment of vaccines demonstrated the power of scientific research and innovation.

– Hygiene Practices: Simple measures like handwashing, mask-wearing, and social distancing proved effective in reducing the spread of the virus.

– Resilience and Adaptability: Communities and individuals showed remarkable resilience and adaptability in the face of unprecedented challenges.

These lessons can help us better prepare for future pandemics and improve our overall health and well-being.
