    The British Franchise Association (BFA) is the UK’s sole voluntary self-regulatory body for the franchise industry, responsible for promoting ethical franchising practices and setting high industry standards. Established in 1977, the BFA provides resources, advice, and accreditation to its members, which include franchisors, franchisees, and specialist advisors and suppliers. 

    Code of Ethics

    As a standards-based organization, the BFA requires all members to abide by its Code of Ethical Conduct, which is based on the European Code of Ethics for Franchising. The code sets ethical requirements for both franchisors and franchisees to ensure fair and transparent dealings. 

    For franchisors, this includes:

    Providing prospective franchisees with comprehensive business information.

    Having a proven, successful business concept.

    Providing initial training and ongoing support.

    Protecting the network’s reputation and brand. 

    For franchisees, the code requires them to:

    Work loyally to develop and grow the franchise business.

    Adhere to non-disclosure agreements.

    Maintain the brand’s identity and reputation. 

    Membership and accreditation

    The BFA offers different membership tiers based on a franchise’s stage of development. Potential franchisor members must pass a rigorous accreditation process that assesses the business’s viability, transferability, ethical standards, and disclosure. 

    Provisional Listing: For companies in the early stages of franchising, such as the pilot phase, that have committed to developing their business according to BFA standards.

    Associate Member: For franchises with at least one franchisee operating for 12 months that are actively building their network.

    Full Member: For established, mature franchised organizations with extensive experience.

    Franchisee Member: Franchisees of BFA-accredited franchisors can join for free to access additional support, networking, and benefits.
